Set Your Hook
A lot of people look at things a bit off from my perspective. They think that getting traffic to a site is the end all be all of web mastery. It isn’t. Getting traffic is a fairly straight forward procedure. You can even buy the stuff, how hard is it really?
The trick is not to get traffic, but to get it to come back, tell it’s friends and most importantly: buy your product.
You have to not just get traffic but get it to convert. This means you have to hook your traffic’s attention.
You start by determining what your hook actually is.
Art of Blogging’s hook is “how to blog.” Odds are, you got here because you want to learn or discuss blogging. You are my traffic right now. You reached this site fairly easily, didn’t you?
See? Getting traffic is easy.
Having you decide to stay and come back and TELL YOUR FRIENDS (subliminal message) depends on how well the hook gets set.
Does this site get your interest? Do I write well enough? Are the topics useful? Is this site delivering value to you?
These are all the things I am striving for to set my hook and get you to come back.
Even if your site isn’t selling anything, you are still trying to get people to view your site and therefor buy into your ideas.
If you are not trying to get traffic to view your work, you are at the wrong site.
Since I know what my hook is, it becomes my job to make sure everything i do and say here serves the purpose of setting it. I have a plan and try to stick to it as much as possible. Even if I do not do a good job, consistency still pays off. As long as I keep working my topic, I am working at setting my hook.
At this point, traffic here is pretty low. This is because I am still preparing my hook. How to type articles are not very good for drawing traffic, but they sure do lay a lot of foundation work to keep the visitors coming back. The howto’s also happen to serve my personal purposes. My theory here is as the information builds the site will become more of a resource and therefor have a better hook.
There are a lot of blogs out there on blogging and in my opinion, a great deal of them do not say anything. Those blogs seem to have a hook of just impressing readers and making a lot of fanboys. That seems to work very well for them. They work it.
Whether your hook is drama or flaming or lowly information peddling, all ways work it. Your readers will appreciate it.
