Newton Was Smart And All, But What Has He Published Lately?
What happens if I start a blog and I don’t keep at it?
That is what a friend of mine asked me. The answer I had for her was the same one I stole from this User Friendly Comic… “your blog will just become a clog and sit there.”
So?
A lot of bloggers get all up in arms about the hordes of new bloggers that hit the web each and every day. Most of these new bloggers will just make a few posts and then go find the next new shiny to play with, leaving their glorious plans of avid blogging in a forgotten realm.
Yes, this makes for an inordinate amount of rubbish to contend with, but those blogs quickly die and fade to oblivion. However, some of those abandoned blogs actually contain something worth reading. Does a fact become less of a fact just because no one is talking about it?
When was the last time you actually discussed gravity?
Newton stopped writing a long time ago, but we still reference his work. Should we deride him for not continuing to publish?
Yeah, that’s what I thought.
While the clogs are rarely of any real quality, there aren’t many blogs I know of that might be around in 400 years like Newton’s work either.
I told my friend to go ahead and give the blog thing a shot and to not set unreasonable goals and see what happens.
Who knows, maybe her just sitting under an apple tree with her laptop blogging might lead to her revolutionizing the whole world for 400 years.
Not the most likely of alternatives, but she might have fun and she might serve her goals with a blog.
Only one way to know, isn’t there?
Frankly, between you and me, I would rather she hurry up and learn this stuff ain’t so easy and that I do work for a living.
Let people try blogging and don’t let them upset you when they fail. At the very least, they may actually learn some respect for those of you who have been at this so long and steadily.
They may also do it better than you when they learn the art.
I guess that is the real reason the blog community can be tough, isn’t it?
Ah well, I hope my friend gives it a try and I hope she does it a lot better than I do.
I wouldn’t mind if you did it better either. ![]()
