Moving a WordPress Installation

Sometimes you have to move from one server to another. It can be a daunting task and can be catastrophic to your online presence. It is best to be prepared. Properly prepared, migrating a live install of WordPress is a fairly simple procedure.

I will outline how to move WordPress from one server to another. This article assumes a couple key things.

  • You know what FTP is and how to connect to both servers.
  • You are working with *nix based servers.
  • You have phpMyAdmin installed on both servers (or similar) installed and know how to access it.
  • Your WordPress install is basic.*
  • Your know your old database information. (DB name, user and password.)
  • You know how to setup a new database or you have the new database information.
  • Your DB is not Holy Mother of God! big.
  • You know what basic FTP commands like CHMOD are.
  • You are smart enough to read all this instructions before you actually start.
  • You know better then to even think of blaming me for anything you do.
  • You understand all of the above.

* If your WordPress install is not basic, it is not a big deal. You will just need to read the instructions and figure out the changes. You made them, they should not be hard to repeat. Chances are though, if you don’t have a basic install the only real changes will still just be in the DB name and the file path’s.

Let’s get started!

Connect to your old server’s phpMyAdmin and select your WordPress database from the drop down menu in the left frame. In this case it is “designblog”. Yours will probably be something like “wordpress”. If you do not know, ask your server admin.
